Where there is a will, there is a way. A group of families began working to organize a new Baptist church in the Benton area in September of 1977. The group met in private homes before securing Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church as an initial meeting place. This may have been the first time a Baptist Church was started in a Catholic Church. Father Hoppi was pleased to have the opportunity to aid a start up church and would not allow Cypress Baptist to assist with rent or utilities. This marked the beginning of a strong relationship between the churches.

At the first Cypress Baptist gathering at the Catholic Church there were 76 people in worship service and 6 in the nursery. Later that month, the first Sunday School classes were started with 70 members enrolled. The number of people in worship had grown to 113, and Elton Mitchell was elected as part time pastor. Sunday school classes met in scattered areas inside the church and on the grounds. One class even met in the back of a station wagon.

On November 30, 1977 the church charter was registered with the State of Louisiana with 115 members. Cypress Baptist Church was now a formalized entity and ready to spread its wings.

January 29, 1978 was another landmark day, with the purchase of land to secure a permanent home for the church. Brother Elton Mitchell was elected as full time pastor on May 28, 1978, and the church petitioned for membership with the Southern Baptist Convention on August 9, 1978 with a membership of 142.

On July 1, 1979, the membership celebrated the completion of a new building with the first worship service in its own sanctuary. The church continued its growth with the addition of a Preschool/Daycare Building in 1981.

Elton Mitchell resigned on April 4, 1982. On June 1, 1982, Brother Billy Pierce became our second pastor. During his tenure, the Family Life Center (1986), the Education Building (1993) and a new Worship Center (1999) were constructed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing church membership.

He announced his retirement in June of 2001. At the time of his retirement, resident membership had grown to over 1800, with 81,410 square feet of building space and a budget of $1,529,236.

On July 21, 2002 the membership of Cypress voted to call Richard Young as the third pastor of Cypress Baptist Church. Bro. Richard resigned in October of 2005, and Bro. Billy Pierce returned as Interim Pastor and served in that capacity until August of 2008.

Bro. John Fream became the fourth pastor of Cypress Baptist on August 1, 2008. The church has begun another cycle of phenomenal growth. The church is now debt free and continues to add new ministries and programs to reach North Bossier for Christ and to share God's word world-wide.
